Hello! Welcome to my website

Lea Skagen, Frontend Developer Student

About me

My name is Lea, and I am currently 22 years old and live in Oslo, Norway. I am studying frontend and mobile development at Kristiania University College, and will graduate with a bachelor's degree in spring 2023.

I was a huge gamer as a child, and I am convinced that it made me interested in technology because I used consoles or the computer all the time. It was very scary as a 20 year old woman to enter this male dominated field, however I feel like I have proven to myself that I am no worse of a developer than my classmates. I hope to be an inspiration to other girls and women who are concidering an education and career in tech, because I wish I had that growing up.

My very first experience with programming was in high school. I chose programming as an elective subject because I had always been fascinated by technology. We were taught Javascript during this course and I hated it. The teacher behaved inappropriately and had very mysogynistic attitude, which made his classes very uncomfortable, especially being only one of three girls in the class.
I dreaded going to his classes and I barely passed, at this point I thought would never want to do programming again.

After graduating high school in 2019 I started at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), where I started on a bachelor's degree in interactive design. Here I learned about basic design principles, universal design and WCAG, prototyping with Figma and Adobe XD.

During the first semester I also had an introductary coding class where I was taught HTML, CSS and some Javascript, however this time was different. The teacher here made this class so fun and exciting. His classes were the highlight of my week. I got so interested in coding that when I found out that I could become a frontend developer, I dropped out after the first year to pursue an education in tech instead.

I started at Kristiania University College in fall of 2020 to pursue a bachelor's degree in frontend and mobile development, and I am still excited about this field. Here I learned more about HTML, CSS and Javascript, and frameworks for these technologies. I have also gotten to learn about new technologies such as React, Java, databases, Kotlin and Android development. The next semester I will learn about React Native, iOS development, Azure and more. I will graduate in spring 2023 and I am looking forward to finally start my career.

Gyldne Pizza Portalen

I made this project with a few other students for an exam we had in the second semester (spring 2021). This website was made for the employees in charge of a fictional resturant chain. Here you can see statistics for different restaurants and menu items, add or remove employees, edit menu items, and a few other things you would want to do as an employee or manager.

Technologies used: HTML, CSS, Bulma, Javascript, Google Charts

Pizzeria Bella

This is another group project I did during the third semester (fall 2021). The project was made for a fictional pizza resturant, where customers can order pizza by adding or removing items from their shopping cart. This was also the very first project we made with React, and it is optimalized for desktop, tablet and phone screen sizes.

Technologies used: HTML, CSS, React

Meliora Impact

This is the most complex project I have been a part of yet, it was made for my most recent exam and I made it with my group.
The project was made for Meliora Impact which is a Norwegian non profit. They wanted a platform where small-medium sized businesses can subscribe to charities, meaning that they donate to them regularly.

Technologies used: React, CSS, Google OpenID, MongoDB, Express.js
